What is the Nervous System and why should you learn to Regulate it?

Think of the Nervous System as your Body’s most intelligent Root system. It consists of the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves;  constantly reacting and recalibrating to the environment, situations and stressors.

The Nervous System controls conscious actions, muscles & movements AND the subconscious functions of the body, such as Breathing, Heart Rate, Digestion and Organ function that run in the background of our daily lives.

The Sympathetic State (Fight/Flight/Freeze/Fawn) is a Survival mechanism to help guide us to safety. When this function turns ONLINE: the heart rate increases, stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline are released, to keep you alert, breathing rate increases, eyes widen, & fast twitch muscles receive more blood supply to react as needed.

All of the mechanisms of The Parasympathetic State (Rest/Digest), including digestion, energy storage, reproductive organs, and long-term maintenance go OFFLINE.

In a  healthy and  resilient Nervous System, as soon as the threat is gone or deescalated, the body will begin to recalibrate.

This process can take a while! Even in cases where a person has both the knowledge and the tools. Once the body feels safety again, the Rest/Digest functions can come back online.

If the feelings of the threat linger, the Nervous System becomes …

Dysregulated

  • Physical: Chronic fatigue, insomnia, frequent headaches/migraines, digestive issues, palpitations, muscle tension, and pain.
  • Emotional: Heightened anxiety, irritability, anger outbursts, depression, feeling overwhelmed, or emotional numbness.
  • Cognitive: Brain fog, poor memory, inability to concentrate, racing thoughts, and trouble making decisions.
  • Behavioral: Being easily "triggered" by minor stress, thrill-seeking, or social withdrawal.

It takes time and tools to become…

Regulated & Resilient

  • Physical: Consistent energy, improved sleep quality, and minimal unexplained pain
  • Emotional Resilience: Ability to manage emotions without feeling overwhelmed.
  • "Rest and Digest" State: Feeling calm, safe, and connected to others.
  • Flexibility: Easily shifting between being energized and relaxed.

Thrive rather than just Survive

It is never too late to build the capacity for Resiliency in the Nervous System.

Resilience is the ability to recover from or adjust easily from adversity, trauma, stress, or significant change

A Personal Journey

“When I found Breathwork, I didn't even know what I was about to do. I attended a class because my friend was teaching it, and I walked out with an awareness and experience I can assuredly say I had never had before.

I've always lived with varying levels of chronic anxiety and mental health swings, but I couldn't figure out what to do about it that I hadn’t already tried (and Did I try!). My Nervous System was on a higher vibration, always a little bit Up-Regulated (in Sympathetic Mode). Some of the tools I had helped me Down-Regulate (Parasympathetic Mode) for short periods, but over time my baseline had leveled up in a non-desirable way. Every time I experienced a trauma or stressful situation, it would send me into a higher more agitated frequency quickly and for longer periods, only downshifting partway.

After a few sessions That Feeling was gone; the background of unrelenting stress, nervous racing thoughts, spirals, heart palpitations, and dis-ease (which often transforms to disease if not cared for). Like when a headache finally disappears after days, I was suddenly able to function and sleep and be present.

Once my NS became more resilient the Magic began to happen. I could visualize desires & ambitions, what feels right in my body, where I see myself, how I feel purpose, and tuned in more when I'm struggling through something emotionally. It helps me be in my grief, healing and feeling again. I can acknowledge these deeper parts of myself, work with them, and move along, informed by them.

There are many sensations felt on a Breathwork journey but one of my favorites is the deep meditative relaxation that awaits me as the Journey winds down and the Integration that follows me through my week.”

  • Reduced Anxiety, Deep emotional Healing, Trauma Release, Clarity, Reconnection to the Self, Nervous System & Emotional Regulation

  • Breathwork and Pranayama are ancient practices. There are so many styles that are used for a variety of purposes. Some are invigorating and some are more balancing.

Down-regulating: Box Breathing, Heart Coherent Breath, 4:8 Breath

Up-regulating: Circular Connected, 3 Part Breath, Wim Hoff, Kapalbhati, Bhastrika

    (just to name a few)

  • Currrent offerings include Circular Connected Breath & 3 Part Breath

These styles of Breathwork are ACTIVE and Trauma-Informed!

Sessions are 45-60 minutes of breathing in and out through the mouth while laying comfortably on a mat with blankets. As the CO2 and O2 exchange is altered, the brain begins to downshift out of the primal state. Instead of a constant narrative running in the background we begin to drop deeply into a somatic (bodily) experience.

  • Modifications will be taught for those who have high blood pressure not controlled by medication, major heart conditions, osteoporosis, detached retina, persons who are pregnant, are living with bipolar disorder or schizophrenia or who have a history of epilepsy or seizures and for those on heavy doses of medication's or who may be abusing alcohol or drugs.

“Maybe the journey isn’t about becoming anything.

Maybe it’s about unbecoming everything that isn’t really you, so that you can be who you were meant to be in the first place”

-Paulo Coelho
